Learn Spanish Words

Me nov 2008

Good day, my name is Robert Sinclair; I am a 35 year old logistics manager from Miami, Florida.

It seems like everywhere you go people speak Spanish.

I've seen how much fun people have with the language when they travel to South America. I always envied these people, but never got around to learning this 3rd most spoken language in the world. Unfortunately during these hard economic times I got an extra incentive to learn it.

All of the co-workers in my company who speak conversational Spanish (or at least know some basic Spanish) are regarded as valued employees (a.k.a last people to get fired).

Check out 1001 Most Useful Spanish Words (Beginners' Guides) which is a 2$ soft cover book from Amazon. More about it below...

When my friend got the boot, I decided to turn things around and learn Spanish and this time for real.

I have purchased many different CDs, tapes, software applications, went to private classes and even listened to hypnotic Spanish courses while sleeping (gave me nothing but sore ears) and almost all methods failed miserably.

It took me a considerable amount of time and money to find the right product, I hope you can benefit from my findings below.

The Spanish courses and intensive Spanish language courses are not reviewed, but I describe them on the web-site.

1001 Most Useful Spanish Words (2$):

When I first saw the price I called my wife over. "Honey, am I reading this right? Does it say 2 dollars here?". Turns out that it did. This was a no brainer for me, so I purchased the book right away. I found it to be indispensable when it comes to learning spanish words. The words and phrases are categorized in different groups such as foods, numbers, days of the week, months, colors, seasons and family. The best part about the book is that it has an A to Z dictionary of Spanish words and each word is used as an example in a sentence. It's an easy fun read and at that price there's no reason not to buy it. Click here for details.

Rosetta stone:

This program is quite expensive. It ranges in the 300 + dollar price range. I was attracted to it because there are a lot of celebrities endorsing the program, they even got Michael Phelps on the front page of the web-site. I am no celebrity. But I don't think the program was less effective because of that. The learning material was a bit bulky and overwhelming for someone who just begins the language learning. Nevertheless it was a good solution to learn Spanish words.

Although it did have different levels of knowledge to select from (1 to 3). It did not offer a solid easy to understand training material. Don't get me wrong. The program was good. But I think it would be better for someone who already knows some Spanish.

Rocket Spanish:

I was a bit sceptical about the program since it was at least 3 times cheaper than Rosetta Stone's package. I decided to give it a try since it had a money back guarantee. I was pleasantly surprised with this training guide. It was made by a native Spanish speaker who knew all of the simple tricks which made the learning process easier.

I was surprised how quickly I was able to learn language. It's truly a beautiful feeling to be able to understand what the Spanish speaking population is talking about. I am often called on by my friends to help them with small Spanish translations.

And when I go on vacation I make a real hit with the tour buddies. I once lead a whole tour group around a Spanish city.

But probably the best part about learning Spanish is that it helped me in my job advancements. I get special assignments and am more valued in the company.

It's a good feeling of security in these turbulent times. I highly recommend Rocket Spanish to my friends and family. I think it is the best way to learn Spanish.

Pimsleur Approach

One of my British buddies was boasting how this program can teach you a language in 10 days. It seemed to good to be true. But the price was so high that I thought there must be some value to it. On some forums people said that they were able to quickly learn Mexican Spanish using the program.

It ranged in 250 + dollars at the time. I was pretty disappointed with this program, it did not provide any real value for the price that was asked. At least I knew that it wouldn't work in 10 days flat, which saved me time as opposed to Rosetta Stone's program.

I refunded my money. And although I was not able to learn basic Spanish using the program I must say that their customer service was outstanding!
